Renting The Truck

Many rental locations are under staffed and extremely busy. We recommend you pick up your truck or trailer the night before your move so you can be sure everything is in order and you have time to make other arrangements if your truck is not as promised. If it is not possible to pick it up the night before, plan on spending 45-90 minutes at the rental location, especially if your pick up is the last day of the month or a weekend.

When best to use a Small Truck (10′-12′):
Small rental truck are intended for very small moves with minimal furniture such as an efficiency apartment or a move that is mostly boxes. Trucks this small will have obstructions on the floor that stick up and limit your floor space. Check with your truck rental company for more information about the specific truck you are renting.

When best to use Medium Trucks (14′-17′):
A medium truck (14′ or 17′ for U-Haul, 16′ for Budget and Penske) is normally adequate for a 2 bedroom apartment or very small house of less than 900 square feet.

When best to use Large Trucks (22′-26′):
A large truck will typically hold a 2-3 bedroom home of 900-1600 square feet. If your home is larger be prepared for the possibility to make more than one tripLarge trucks can hold many items if professionally packed. Remember to rent plenty of moving pads with your truck as this will make it easier to fully pack your truck. Penske offers a 22′ and 26′ truck. Budget largest trucks are 24′ and U-Haul offers both 24′ and 26′.
